This Will Never End - A Song about the Harry Potter Fandom

  • This is a YouTube video of Harry Potter fans reminiscing over the series. What kind of identity does this give to Harry Potter fans, does it portray them as loyal, or obsessed? Do you think other fandoms have a hard time “saying goodbye” to what they follow? Do you think Harry Potter leave a legacy, such as Star Wars or Batman?

The video gives people the identity of being extreme Harry Potter enthusiast. The fact alone that they created a video around the Harry Potter series proves that they are obsessed with it. I enjoy the Potter's series but, I wouldn't see myself creating a video about the harry potter world. The idea that other fandoms have a time "saying goodbye" is completely possible. When someone enjoys something so much and it's finally over, its a big deal. Harry Potter being over is a mile stone in many people's lives. People born in the early 90's grew up with Harry Potter and his crew so saying goodbye to the end of it could be hard to do and extremely sad. Harry Potter leaves a legacy just as much as Star wars of Batman does. They all greatly impacted lives and gave the public something to enjoy and look forward to.

This video feels like an over exaggeration of the Harry Potter fan. Being a fan myself, I know that I am not this crazy unless its the night of the premier. I believe that once you are a Harry Potter fan, your always a Harry Potter fan. Once this fandom dies out, there will still be some crazies about it, but most of us will just go on. I'm not saying that if it comes on tv in 20 years, we won't watch it, but it is like an old friend. We don't obsess them, but when we see them we enjoy their company. Harry Potter will definitely be a legacy like Batman because a huge amount of the population knows about it and interacts with it.

I agree with Jo when she said its like an old friend. We are just happy to see them. This video was defiantly over exaggerated but tells that they do enjoy Harry Potter. It gives Harry Potter fans the Identity that they are loyal fans that always have a place for a little magic. When we watch all of the movies of HP. Its like you can see and feel what Harry is going through and the battles he faces internally and externally and we can relate to that.Harry Potter has already left a legacy. Our kids kids kids will still be fans of the series. I even own a Harry Potter wand I got at Universal Studios :) It really works also. I use it all of the time. Actually used it to write this reply.

This video definitely portrays Harry Potter fans as obsessed. The effort and time they put into this video is evidence of their passion for the series. They clearly spent time writing the song, editing the video, and filming footage. In the song they talk about making friends through the series and have pictures and video clips of their memories. I think anyone who feels this passionately about something would have a hard time "saying goodbye". Many people felt they grew up with the Harry Potter series and that the end of the series symbolized the end of their childhood. I think the Harry Potter series has already left a legacy that will continue for years to come. I would compare the HP series to the fandom that surrounded the Beatles in the 1960's. Beatle-mania left a legacy that continues to this day and is a mania that continues today which is how I feel HP will live on.

This video was really interesting in the fact that they attempted to break the stereotype of Harry Potter fans by incorporating a rap to the fear of losing their fandom. This video shows the loyalty to the Harry Potter series to the point of obsession because they fear losing their identity. I think that if you are a fan of practically anything, it is almost impossible to say goodbye to it because what you love becomes a part of you. Half of the footage in this video had absolutely nothing to do with Harry Potter, but the other half depicted activities shown in the Harry Potter series. I think the main intent of this video was to try to intrigue other people not familiar with the series to figure out why they were reminiscing it.

I thought it was really interesting that they incorporated the word "fandom" into their lyrics, labeling their love of Harry Potter as such. The pictures portray a loyalty to the Harry Potter series, but, like Olivia said, the amount of time invested in the creation of the video portrays these fans as obsessed. Saying goodbye is difficult for many fans because so many memories and friendships are made through their fandom. Like we have discussed in class, fandom is, for many people, an escape. Without the next book or movie to look forward to, Harry Potter fans may find themselves feeling down or lost for a while. Ultimately, I think Harry Potter will leave a legacy that will keep fans re-reading and watching the movies for years to come.

I think that this definitely creates a loyal, yet still more than a tad obsessive portrayal of the fan base. The video shows many fans of the series but many of them don't seem to go as far as the creators of the song and video, and most of the fans won't. I do think that fans will have a hard time saying goodbye, but only because the story has been a part of many lives since the mid nineties. I definitely was a little sad after the end of the last movie and even the last book, simply because I've had fun reading the books since I was 8. But it doesn't go any further than that for me, and I believe many other fans could say the same thing. I definitely believe that Harry Potter already has a strong legacy that won't diminish for a long time.

I feel like Harry Potter fans are very loyal. While it is very easy for people to enjoy the books but hate the movie versions; Harry Potter fans enjoy all aspects of the series. There are many types of fans, the obsessed fans take annual vacations to Potter-world, and loyal fans that still read the books on a yearly basis. This video is definitely an exaggeration of the average fan, but for some fans this would be considered mild. I know that Harry Potter will leave a legacy because it was such a huge part of our generation, so we will share it with the future generations (Star Trek anyone?).

The fact that these people state that the fandom will always be a part of who they are proves how loyal to the series they are. I feel like this was a pretty accurate representation of the Harry Potter fan because they showed pictures of just the average people who read the books and enjoy them and they also show the people who think that they actually are in the books, costumes included. And I loved how horribly terrible this rapping was, made my night.
