The Great Meteor of 1998

  • This screencap is of an actual facebook conversation. What can you determine about the original poster from their status? How much of this is intentional and how much accidental? Looking at the responses, how have the original poster's friends interpreted her identity and how are they engaging with her as a result?

This girl is befuddled! They are tricking her. You can easily tell because Trey adds in that Aerosmith made a song about it. She is very gullible and doesn't want to take the time to figure out if this is really true. It is kind of sad that she doesn't even realize that it may not be plausible.

She does not care if its plausable or not because she seems to be as they say"up the shit creek without a paddle." Meaning she is worried about getting her assignment done in time.

Whitney has to write a paper for a class and is asking her facebook friends for help. Her facebook friends Jon and Trey decide to be good friends and try to "help" her. They interpreted her identity as not being the smartest person around. They were able to come up with this identity of her based on the way she wrote her status. She misspelled countless words and replaced words such as "anyone" with "n e 1". Jon and Trey started posting funny/sarcastic responses to see how she would respond. She responded just like they probably thought she would. She believed they were stating actual facts. They could tell from her unintelligent facebook status that she was probably unintelligent herself and wouldn't be able to distinguish between a joke and the truth.

This girl is so gullible. They two guys are messing with her and it seems like she doesn't realize it. She seemed to have way too many grammatical mistakes, which makes the other two want to mess with her even more. She just makes herself look like a joke.

Both Jon and Trey assumed that because Whitney had atrocious grammar & spelling and asked for homework help on facebook (presumably not actually taking the time to research herself), she was lazy and gullible. Jon purposely misdirected her by subtly referencing Armageddon, and Trey followed suit. They obviously do not think highly of her, especially after she took the joke seriously!

This girl doesn't have a clue! Her "friends" are intentionally taking advantage of her laziness and studpidity and having fun with it. I think at first Jon's comment started as a joke but when Whitney seemed to believe it, Trey just kept it going. Clearly, they don't see Whitney as being very bright. I would really like to know though how her paper turned out and what the teacher thought . . .

I don't think that they are taking advantage of her because of her spelling and grammer. I think that they threw bait out to see if she would catch on to it(since she is a girl and guys like to take advantage of girls)
    and she did.

"Twilson" I think that your dumb blond question is sooooooooooooo correct!

From reading her original status, the girl seems like a dim light bulb, not so bright. She doesn't even bother typing out the word anyone and instead uses "n e 1." She can't even spell meteor correctly, which shows that she really doesn't care about trying to do her homework well. Jon seems to have intentionally asked if she needed help, but then her response to her needing help was complaining. He then took the opportunity to mess with her. Both the boys make up ridiculous stories, and she was too gullible and believed them. Her friends seem to know that she is a complete idiot and associate her with other Facebook girls who post half-nude pictures of themselves and complain about how their life sucks. They did this probably to post this on Unfriendable.

The girl shows that she has absolutely no interest or previous knowledge about meteors, and that she's simply looking for an easy way through this assignment. Much of the ignorance that she shows is accidental, yet because of her openness and lack of willingness to research her topic, she opens her self to being the butt of her friend's jokes. They take her to be incredibly gullible, and they then take advantage of such to have a laugh at her expense.

Sad, sad Whitney. The girl has no shame with her virtual reputation and apparently does not care if she appears to be illiterate and foolish. I don't believe there is anything wrong with asking for suggestions or help through facebook as it's a great outlet for shared thoughts and different perspectives, however, that is all it should be. Just be sure to do your own research too, Whit.

The girl in the beginning of the conversation was nearly impossible to understand and I think that was her intention. Her status migh indicate that she was afraid that her main circle of friends might judge her if she actually knew anything about meteors. I think her spelling errors might have been accidental, but the way she phrased her thoughts were intentional. Her friends have interpreted her identity as the "dumb blonde" figure, and decide to make up stories to confuse her further. By comparing it to music, her one friend tries to make it more relatable to her, making it more believable.

Olivia...I wonder too how her paper turned out ;)) haha!

By reading this Facebook conversation, you can assume that the original poster is both uneducated and ridiculously gullible! You can also assume from her use of grammar and English that she isn’t the greatest student and probably will not receive a decent grade on the paper she has been assigned. I would think that most of the poster’s mistakes in her comments were accidental, but her use of profanity (shit, shit, shit…) was definitely intentional and not very creative. By reading the posts from the poster’s friends, you can see that they have caught on to her lack of proper English and possible lack of intelligence. These “friends” have poked fun at the poster by giving her false information to write her essay about, letting the reader assume that the poster’s friends have also formed an unintelligent identity for her just as the reader has. From reading this I would assume that the poster will write (or “right”) her essay about “The Great Meteor of 1998”, letting others form the same identity that I, as a reader, have formed.

Man, I feel like I went to high school with all of the Whitneys of the world. If I went to school with her, I would be ashamed to say I earned the same diploma as she did. I think this is proof that our school systems often fail to educate some students. Perhaps common sense should be taught in a class somewhere. She is obviously very ignorant and it is clear that her peers think of her as this, and use her ignorance as an opportunity for them to have some fun. I am not entirely certain, though, that she is actually this dumb. Girls often think that the dumber and ditzier they are, the more attractive they seem to guys. She may have been playing that up a bit. I am not sure if I would unfriend her immediately or if I would keep her just for entertainment.
