With Halloween around the corner, costumes are a main topic of dissuasion. In this short news cast, a new costume is discussed - Illegal Alien. How do you feel about this new costume. Do you think that the people in the video have a right to be mad? What about the costume shop owners, should they be looked down upon if they sell this costume? Illegal Aliens have long been a problem in the United States, but do you think that this has taken it too far and become offensive?

Do you think that the people in the video have a right to be mad? As the lady at the store said. Everyone can be offended by something. I wouldn't choose this costume though. I found it ironic that the first guy they questioned about his thoughts was possibly of Hispanic descent and it was ok with him. It can be humorous but illegal immigration is a serious issue. For people that are tying to get into the U.S the correct way. What does things like this tell them about our country? Its about perception because it mocks the stereotype. Its easy for us to say its just a costume and its in fun. I would challenge someone who says that to put themselves in the shoes of an immigrant.

What about the costume shop owners, should they be looked down upon if they sell this costume? The costume companies are just trying to make money and find the newest possible "trends" for the holiday. Its clear this one will not be a trend. If they did continue to sell these and it offends you then don't buy it. Instead buy everyone's favorite political figure and we all know that is Mr. Obama.Illegal Aliens have long been a problem in the United.

Shoemaker I like your comment about the first guy questioned being of Hispanic decent. I am kind of indifferent to this. I can understand why the immigrants would be offended, but there are soooo many different offensive costumes out there. I also understand that store keepers would want to sell this because it would be a very popular costume, and they do not want to lose out on this target market. I really agree with Nate Brown saying, "Its creative". It is extremely original. I also like Maribella's comment that is is a conscious choice. I feel like if you want to take the heat you can wear it just be prepared for what is to come. I also understand the activist's quote about them being hardworking. It is almost ironic because, at least I feel, immigrants are some of the hardest working people out there. I remember hearing a news story about a year or two ago about when a specific fruit was being harvested that it all went bad because the immigrants had all been sent back and the American would't do that kind of work. So I do understand the activist's point, but it is Halloween so I have come to the conclusion that I am indifferent to this.

I agree with what you say about being indifferent Joe. This costume just seems like more hassle then it's worth. It's somewhat interesting, but there are SO MANY more costumes to choose from that would be MORE entertaining, AND you wouldn't have to worry about offending anyone. Personally, I'm not offended by it. I just think it's bad taste. Then again, I'm not an illegal alien. Also, I live in Ohio which is very far away from major illegal alien problems.
If I owned a costume shop, I wouldn't carry it because, again, it would be more hassle than it is worth. I doubt many people would come to a costume store looking specifically for that costume. If someone did, then you might lose the business of one person. However, if you carried the costume, you could risk losing multiple customers because your store could lose respect if word spreads that you are carrying an offensive illegal alien costume. I wouldn't DARE put this in my stores if I lived in Texas!

This really caught my interest. Personally, this issue is close to my heart and because of my tie with it, I find myself thinking this crosses the line. I'm not one to be offended easily and can find humor in almost every situation, however, the issue of illegal immigration is devastating. If someone is quite literally risking their (and possibly even their dear family's) life/lives by crossing the border and finding a dangerous way into the united states, it is for a damn good reason that's worth it all. A better life. Many of the illegal immigrants come from destructive backgrounds and unimaginable political/societal/religious/cast groups that contain their freedom in their own hands. We are so lucky as to not know what that entails - but my gut says that if we only knew and were in the same shoes, we would also want to flee to the land of the free.

I understand that this is quite a heated political issue in the US right now, but I do not understand why it has been turned into a halloween costume. Americans complain and complain until their blue in the face about this problem and then, for one night a year, think it's funny to mock the situation? I, for one, would never wear this costume or sell it in my personal store because of my morals and opinions.

People are going to dress up as whatever their heart desires on Halloween. It is the one day a year that people can dress up as anything they want and society is okay with it. This particular costume definitely will cause people to talk, but many people will take it as a joke. Immigrants however would be greatly offended by this costume, even legal immigrants would find this offensive because many people aren't kind towards them either. Illegal immigration has become such a large issue for the US many people would like the fact that it's calling attention to the issue. I would not wear a costume like this because at one point everyone (besides the Native Americans) was an immigrant and how would you like your ancestors feeling as if they were being attacked. This costume would cause too many problems, and I don;t blame stores for not wanting to sell it.

Personally, I find this costume to be very offensive. As Ada said, there are people risking their lives just to live in the U.S. and immigration is a very heated issue. To make a tacky Halloween costume mocking it is just poor taste. I would put this in the same category as dressing up as a Nazi or terrorist. Halloween is supposed to be a fun and lighthearted holiday. To mock such a serious issue is not okay. There are thousands of more non-offensive, creative, and entertaining costumes out there to choose from. Why dress up as something so controversial on a day that is just supposed to be for fun?

I can definitely see why people got upset over this costume and they have the right to be upset. I get that it's clever and I could see why it would appeal to some people, but I think that it is offensive and inappropriate. I don't think that it says anything bad about the retailers because if they do choose to sell it it's a business decision and i don't see why many would because I feel like it would chase more people away than it would bring in.

I agree with Ada and Olivia that with illegal immigration being such a heated topic in today’s politics, it is completely unnecessary to create a Halloween costume portraying one. Also why would anyone possible want to dress up like an immigrant in a mocking way when all they are trying to do is pursue a better future just like everyone else (we are all pursuing a better future by attending college). I understand Halloween is just one day to dress up as anything and have fun but there a million other costumes that would be amusing, I don’t even see how those costumes are funny to people anyway. I think it is a wise choice for store owners to avoid selling these illegal immigrant costumes because I think the people who are offended or think the costumes are just stupid out way the small group of people who would actually be interested in purchasing one.

I completely agree with Olivia when she says this is comparable to selling/supporting costumes made to look like Nazis or terrorists. It is like there are questioanble costumes and then there are some that just go beyond being questionable. What crowd would this costume even appeal to? I would just be embarassed that this was the best idea of a costume that I could think of. With that being said, it is the store owner's and consumer's right to sell or be whatever they want for Halloween. I do not think the excuse that new ideas for creative costumes have run out exists though, so if someone is going to wear this, he or she better be prepared to defend themselves for other reasons if and when people give them a hard time.

This discussion could go both directions, hands down. People can say it's comparable to selling Nazi costumes, but stores do sell Nazi costumes! As they said in the video, Halloween is a time to be silly to poke fun at stereotypes. On Halloween, you purposely act out of order to be something that you're not on the day to day, that's the entire purpose of the holiday. I think that if a costume offends a person, then don't buy it. It's as simple as that. I can't say for certain, but I'm guessing cowboys don't take offense to others dressing up like them on the holiday. On the same note, I don't think the hookers of the world care that they're being impersonated on Halloween night. As I said before, people do have the right to be upset by the costume, that's just our basic right. We live in a damn well-run democracy, if you don't like something, petition it and push for change! As these people have done, they've showed their disapproval of the costumes and retailers have complied, obviously they don't want to lose potential costumers.

I agree with Brandon. It can definitely come off as offense to certain people but that never stopped anyone before on Halloween. People dress up and its all fun and games at the end of the day. Girls love dressing "risky" on Halloween because its almost an excuse to. Racial costumes are nothing new and will never stop because of the society we live in. It wouldn't be as funny or sell as well if it didn't tip toe the boundary of being too offensive

HAH! I found this pretty entertaining. It's a halloween costume, people need to relax. So many Halloween costumes could be offensive to people depending on what they believe in I honestly don't find it that big of a deal. The people in the video have the right to respond how ever they want about the costumes. But they have to know that if they get upset about someone wearing and illegal alien costume and they're wearing something like a nun costume, then they have no room to talk. Costumes can be offensive to anyone so i find it best to just not make a big deal about it and to over look what you find wrong.

I think this Halloween costume illustrates a larger issue in our society. I agree with Paige's comment about how this costume is not the only offensive one out there. But, why do Halloween costumes have to be offensive? What is it about making fun of people, or making a costume super slutty socially acceptable during Halloween? Of course, there will always be Halloween costumes that might offend someone. It is up to the discretion of the individual weather they would wear it or not.
